Modern technique began in the 19th century as a reaction towards classical ballet, using boundless freedom of movement and expression, however ballet foundations are used to develop technique. Modern classes include learning how to initiate movement through the breath and use of the spine by contracting, releasing, twisting, and tilting. Class warm-up works through parallel vs. turned-out position, core initiation, use of the floor, flexibility, and strength building with yoga and Pilates influences. Students will learn musical timing, how to use the body to portray emotion, and choreography. Classes will also explore partnering, weight-sharing, and modern technique influences such as Limon, Horton, Release, and Graham technique.
****Students are required to be enrolled in a Ballet class and Modern 3-5 Technique and Composition.
