Modern 3 is an intermediate class building off of previous modern technique and challenging the body to take risks and be creative. Class is rooted in ballet technique, but with the freedom of movement and expression. Class includes learning how to initiate movement through the breath and use of the spine; contract/release, twists, and tilts. Class warm-up will work through parallel vs. turn-out position, core initiation, use of the floor, and flexibility and strength building through yoga and Pilates influences. Center warm-up and across the floor will consist of runs, jumps, turns, swinging movements, and floor work such as fall/recovery, rolls, slides, and intermediate level weight-bearing inversions. Students will learn improvisational techniques, beginner partnering, dynamic shifts in movement, and how to use the body to portray emotion. Class influences come from modern dance techniques such as Limon, Horton, and Cunningham. The class will learn intermediate modern choreography varying from release technique, contemporary dance, quirky gesture phrases, and movement with difficult physicality.
**Students are required to have a current enrollment in a ballet class.
