Ezra Owen is a freelance dance artist, specialising in hip hop and contemporary movement. Originally introduced to dance through breaking, Ezra later joined the Centre for Advanced Training scheme in Nottingham, UK where he was taught a range of other forms, including ballet and contemporary dance. Ezra went on to study a Bachelor’s degree in Dance at Kingston University, London where he met a network of dancers and choreographers, and joined The Company, a group of Kingston University graduates, led by Lee Griffiths. Ezra performed with The Company at various dance festivals, including Breakin’ Convention 2015 (London) Agitart Dance Festival 2015 (Spain), and also presented their work Zion at The Place as part of Resolution Festival 2015.

During his studies at Kingston University Ezra also joined Botis Seva’s dance theatre collective Far From the Norm, performing at World of Dance UK 2014; Footprint Dance Festival 2015 at the University of Roehampton and Botis Seva’s Wildcard 2015 at Sadlers Wells. After graduating in 2016 with First Class honours, he continued performing as a core company member, working on their production at the time Woman of Sun, a Greenwich Dance and Trinity Laban Partnership Compass Commission to create a new full length work at Laban Theatre.

Since then Ezra has performed nationally and internationally, including in the Olivier Award-winning BLKDOG, originally commissioned as part of Reckonings, a night held in celebration of Sadler’s Well’s 20th anniversary. Recent performances of BLKDOG include Summer Dance Forever 2019 at the DeLaMar Theater, Amsterdam, Sampled 2020 at Sadler’s Wells Theatre, London, in addition to the Spring 2020-2021 UK Tour.

Ezra has also worked on additional projects as a Far from the Norm member, such as: Gen 20:20, created in collaboration with SiDance Festival (South Korea), co-commissioned by Crying Out Loud and Producer Group DOT and supported by Arts Council England and Arts Council Korea; and Union Black, a collaboration between Far From The Norm and European dancers and circus artists from Paris, Stockholm, London and Cork, supported by Crying Out Loud and funded by the Creative Europe programme.

Ezra also performed at global Breakin’ Conventions in Toronto and Luxembourg; and danced in performances of 60 Sec at European competitions including Centre de Danse du Marais (France); Choreography 30 (Germany); CICC (Denmark); and Tanzgala (Germany). He has toured extensively in the outdoor festival circuit with Far From The Norm, performing Without Walls Commission H.O.H, followed by Da Native, commissioned by Latitude Festival and Greenwich + Docklands International Festival. He has also worked on several film commissions, including Wayne McGregor’s Winged Bull in the Elephant Case (BBC 2) and Reach (Channel 4 Random Acts).

Most recently, Ezra supported Botis Seva as movement assistant during the creation of The Hunt, directed by Rupert Goold and presented by the Almeida Theatre. He also assisted Seva on a new commission MADHEAD for the National Youth Dance Company (UK Tour).
